According to the authority, George Gathu Matheri was fatally shot on Sunday, January 19, 2026, following a brief confrontation with police officers who were on patrol within Karatina Town.

IPOA has launched investigations into the fatal shooting of George Gathu Matheri in Nyeri County, allegedly involving police officers.

The authority said it had dispatched a Rapid Response Team and seized the scene for forensic analysis, while urging calm after protests disrupted traffic and assuring the public that all efforts are being made to achieve justice.

According to the authority, George Gathu Matheri was fatally shot on Sunday, January 18, 2026, following a brief confrontation with police officers who were on patrol within Karatina Town.

IPOA said the police officer suspected of having fired the fatal shot has so far been arrested and detained for further processing to be arraigned in court.

The shooting quickly escalated into wider tension within the area. IPOA reported that following Matheri’s death, heightened tension emerged as local residents barricaded the Nairobi–Karatina highway, paralysing the smooth flow of traffic.

The authority added that property of unknown value was vandalised during the unrest, reaffirming the depth of anger and frustration among residents.

In response, IPOA said it had taken immediate steps to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident. “IPOA has already dispatched a Rapid Response Team from Nyeri Regional Office to commence investigations and gather all relevant information,” the statement said.

The authority confirmed that it had seized the scene of incidence and was collecting crucial evidence for forensic and ballistic analysis.

The move reflects IPOA’s mandate to independently investigate deaths and serious injuries resulting from police action.

The authority emphasised that its work would be guided by its core principles, stating that it remains committed to independence, impartiality, and fairness.

Beyond the technical investigation, IPOA also addressed the human impact of the incident. The authority said it condoles with the family of Matheri and appealed to members of the public to remain calm as investigations continue.

It further called on witnesses to assist investigators, urging anyone who may have witnessed the incident in the area to come forward with information that may assist in the ongoing investigation.

The authority sought to reassure both the bereaved family and the wider public that accountability would be pursued.

“IPOA assures the public that all efforts are being made to achieve justice for the family of the deceased,” the statement said.

The arrest of the officer suspected to have fired the fatal shot marks a critical step in the process, as IPOA works alongside other institutions to ensure due process.

While details of the confrontation remain under investigation, the authority’s swift response signals heightened sensitivity around police-involved shootings and public confidence in oversight mechanisms.

The unrest that followed the shooting highlights the fragile relationship between communities and law enforcement, particularly in cases involving loss of life.

By moving quickly to secure the scene, launch forensic analysis, and communicate publicly, IPOA appears keen to demonstrate transparency and responsiveness.
